Explore Salcey Forest

Looking for a forest walk that feels rich in history and nature? Salcey Forest, located between Northampton and Milton Keynes, is a unique Forestry England destination where ancient woodland meets peaceful, accessible trails.

This former royal hunting forest is steeped in heritage, with miles of woodland paths, veteran oak trees and open spaces that invite you to slow down and explore. Whether you’re visiting for a quiet walk or a family day outdoors, Salcey offers a different kind of forest experience - one shaped by centuries of natural growth.

An Ancient Woodland Landscape

Salcey Forest is one of the largest remaining areas of ancient woodland in the region, with some oak trees believed to be over 600 years old.

These veteran trees - often referred to as ‘druids’ - provide important habitats for wildlife and give the forest its distinctive character. As you walk through Salcey, you’ll notice a mix of open rides, dense woodland and historic features, including old wood banks and remnants of its past as a medieval hunting forest.

It’s a place where every path feels connected to nature and history, making it ideal for a slower, more mindful kind of walk.
